Our planet is facing challenges, but a sense of hope remains. A new award originating at the interdisciplinary festival the Starmus festival aims to inspire people to act.

This new Earth medal bearing Jane Goodall's name will honor in honour of the celebrated British primatologist who passed away recently. It is designed to celebrate individuals and groups that advocate for life on Earth.

Honoring a Legacy

Initial honorees will be revealed at the upcoming Starmus event in Tenerife and La Palma, scheduled from October 17th to 22nd the coming year.

Reports indicate that Jane Goodall, a former member of the festival's board, had backed the award’s creation. “The vision of having this medal, and the festival being tasked with organising it, is Jane’s,” a representative said. “Her desire was that she wanted this to happen. And I think because of the close relationship she shared with the festival.”

“This medal will acknowledge sustainable programmes undertaken to make our world improved for all living beings and ecosystems and provide encouragement for the continuation such efforts,” commented a relative.

Format and Inspiration

A co-founder of the festival indicated that the medal – which was announced at a prestigious venue – would probably include several divisions.

“The intent is for it to be modeled after the Stephen Hawking medal for science communication established a decade past,” it was explained. Jane Goodall herself received of that award.

Expressing concern on the outlook of the planet, a prominent voice remarked, “To be truthful, it’s very hard to maintain optimism. Present governance globally is conducting an assault on knowledge. So this significantly hampers global initiatives.”

“To be honest, things don’t look particularly bright which means we need to commence thinking again, much more seriously about the consequences of human activity. This concern encompasses not only climate change, that’s the whole way in which we interact with our environment.”

Following an Example

Consequently, observers believe this is an opportune moment to honor her guiding principles. “I think that in bestowing the prize, we will be considering this essential spirit that Jane embodied – that was her priority, to transform the way we treat the other animals with which we share the planet.”

A major topic currently is the proliferation of false information. The central topic of next year’s festival will be “the pursuit of factual understanding”.

“It has become apparent that truth is becoming a matter of debate when politics is involved. And it’s a very dangerous thing,” he commented. “The science of climate is a science; it is impossible to allow interference from politics in climate science.”

Optimism and Resolve

The hope remains that this honor will inspire positive change. “It’s about inspiring individuals to participate and to care and to strive in that direction, truly. Regardless of if we feel hopeful, we have to look at working all that is possible,” a statement concluded. “Be prepared for failure, yet we must continue striving towards succeeding.”

A descendant engaged in environmental protection shared hope that “given direction and once enabled, humanity are capable of being diligent stewards of our planet”, highlighting the programs of a foundation that, in addition to its projects, assists the next generation get involved locally, wildlife, and the natural world.

“As my late grandmother repeatedly emphasized, our daily actions make a difference and the responsibility lies with us the kind of difference we choose to create,” he said. “There is still time and this medal will offer support and raise awareness regarding beneficial initiatives that people are making.”
