"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the Haim sisters?" an inquiry pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

However, there remains a key snag: The sender also desires to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Several high-profile supporters have also coveted the role.

It's clear a special quality is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're multiple Grammy Award nominees.

Similar to the best groups, they're a tight-knit trio. Their videos frequently show them marching in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such unfettered happiness you inevitably think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That's the biggest honour. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate people to start a band."

"And thus all is invited to be the fourth part of the family."

Historic Milestone

The group are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in consideration for the award.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the nomination resonates with the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major achievement," adds Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the women that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The project emerged from a phase of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that unique liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The words detail endings and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real life who they are becoming.

"I love way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to actively work on shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed toughness called for a different sonic direction – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The trio's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Path

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their standing in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an global following.

But the sister act will always be their primary focus.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
