As Sunbathers Fled Attack, Popular Picture Captures Lifeguard Dashing ‘Full Speed’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, views the iconic beach as her personal space. On a recent weekend evening, she, similar to other local residents, detected cracking sounds reverberating through the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was still too bright and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Exiting her home, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore signaled something was wrong.

As she stood on the road, talking to a couple who had hurried up the slope still dripping wet, she noticed someone approaching behind her. The person was a beach patrol officer, dashing to Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. He was alone running in the direction that all the others was trying to get away from, and hauling that sizeable pack and unshod … He’s running towards something that certainly every fibre in your being would tell you to go in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally pedal to the metal sprinting.”

A Symbol of Bravery In the Wake of Crisis

The image taken by Ching of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as a prime example of instances of heroism in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, officers and paramedics caring for many victims.

Collective Response and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was part of a broader narrative to be shared by the neighbourhood, with the beach facility beside the location of the incident becoming a impromptu hospital. Reports indicate that colleagues were also seen responding bravely, such as entering the ocean to rescue people needing help.

After the tragedy, comments of appreciation circulated widely. One post shared appreciation for the responders who demonstrated that “kindness will always overcome darkness”.

The group of beach patrol issued a statement, explaining they were “processing what happened”.

“Thank you all for your supportive words and support. We are overwhelmed by the care for our team,” the team wrote. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the hope that it aids those impacted.”

Local Government Recognition

Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many permanent beach safety officers, stated that the team rose to the occasion from the instant the shooting started through to late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many moving narratives, but the popular photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help save lives is remarkable,” said a mayor.

“The team demonstrate dedication every day in keeping our world-famous shores secure for surfers and swimmers, but what we observed on that day should be commended.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the horror of this violent and horrific terrorist attack, I think it is vital that we consider just how much positivity we have observed in the presence of such hatred.”
