Educator Slain and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Firefight at Nigerian School
Armed assailants have taken the life of an instructor and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an attack on a girls' secondary school in north-western Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The gang of attackers breached the comprehensive secondary school for girls in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the beginning of the work week, police confirmed.
The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a gun duel" before climbing over the boundary wall and seizing the students from their hostel, authorities disclosed.
A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now receiving treatment.
Observers recounted a considerable contingent of armed individuals, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to cause panic.
Local residents disclosed to media that the armed men then led a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.
The police said they had deployed "additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and vigilante groups" to the area.
