Followers Urge Custody of Man Who Grabbed Ariana Grande
Devoted fans of the actress are urging that a individual who jumped a barrier and grabbed the celebrity during Thursday's Wicked: For Good launch be taken into custody or deported from Singapore.
A widely shared video shows the Australian man pushing past camera operators and lunging at Grande while the performers walked down a yellow carpet surrounded by onlookers.
Co-star Cynthia Erivo promptly guided the stunned actress away from Mr Wen, who was seen being escorted out of the gathering by event staff.
Mr Wen stated on Instagram Thursday evening that he was "let go after being taken in", though official papers showed that he was set to be present on Friday morning. It is uncertain if he was charged.
History of Disruptions
This is part of a pattern for Mr Wen, who labels himself a "Controversial Figure", has disrupted a concert or event. His Instagram account contains recordings of him interrupting other star-studded functions, including rushing the platform at the pop singer's Sydney performance in June this year and in a like fashion during The Chainsmokers event in the area last December.
"There needs to be action taken against him as this is clearly a punishable act," stated an Instagram commenter, in a response to a video Mr Wen uploaded of his actions.
"You've done this repeatedly... how are you not behind bars?" a different Instagram user remarked.
Fans Express Concern Over Grande's Well-being
Several fans accused Mr Wen for "triggering past anxiety" Grande, who had spoken of suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after a devastating incident at the finale of her May 2017 show in Manchester, resulting in the death of 22 people and injuring numerous individuals.
"After everything she's faced... including the Manchester attack, you considered it entertaining to rush the barrier?" said one more response on Instagram.
A number of supporters also faulted guards at the gathering for not being vigilant enough; while different individuals called for social media platforms to ban Mr Wen's content.
Reaction and Premiere Information
In footage circulating online, Grande seemed surprised when she was approached by the man. Her fellow actors Michelle Yeoh and Erivo can be spotted comforting her while Mr Wen was escorted away by staff.
Grande has not issued a statement on the incident, and the remaining proceedings continued without further issues.
Hundreds of fans had gathered in a sea of colorful attire at the Wicked: For Good international debut in a Singapore venue, including a number who had stood in line for as long as a significant duration before it began.
The film, to be premiered on the 21st of November, is the follow-up of a two-film version of the popular stage show Wicked, which revolves around the unlikely relationship between two distinct characters.
The show itself is a adaptation of the 1900 story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Grande, who plays the character Glinda Glinda, was adorned in a rosé sequin dress at the premiere while Erivo, who portrays the wicked witch, wore a sleek black dress decorated with roses.
They were joined by cast member Jeff Goldblum.
The initial film, Wicked, was the most successful film of the previous year in the UK, and received ten Academy Award nods, earning two for excellent wardrobe and artistic direction.
