Tropical Storm the storm is forecast to escalate to a uncommon category five hurricane as it veers toward the Caribbean island, bringing dangerous flash flooding and mudslides.

The cyclone, which registered winds of up to 120 mph as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is now shifting toward the northwest in the Caribbean Sea and is projected to hit the coast by Tuesday, based on data from weather experts.

Alerts of electricity outages and structural damage have been released as Melissa produces up to 30 inches of rain and storm surges as high as 13ft above normal levels. "Seek shelter now," locals have been advised.

The cyclone is the thirteenth hurricane in the current Atlantic season, which typically ends in November.

A category five storm is the most powerful category, with sustained winds of at least 252 km/h.
