Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 individuals perished and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
