Intensifying Verbal Conflict Among Ethiopian Government and Eritrea Raises Anxieties of Conflict

Increasing concerns are present about the chance of military engagement among Horn of Africa neighbors, Ethiopia and the Eritrean government, as confrontational discourse has intensified in the last month.

Ethiopia and The Eritrean government cooperated in the civil war in Tigray but they have subsequently disagreed.

What Did Ethiopian Officials Said?

Landlocked Ethiopia's demands for entry to the maritime outlet through Eritrea has sparked a heated rhetorical conflict.

PM Abiy Ahmed previously announced in the previous year that his government's maritime access was an existential matter, comments that Eritrean authorities ignored.

Ties between the both governments have frequently been strained. After a decades-long battle for independence, Eritrea, which has a extensive maritime frontage, officially seceded from Ethiopia in the early 1990s, leaving it landlocked.

Five years later, a territorial conflict started in which over a hundred thousand people lost their lives.

Current Remarks from Ethiopia's Leadership

Prime Minister Abiy and military leader General Birhanu Jula have publicly asserted control of Eritrea's maritime facility of Assab – about 60km from the frontier - and hinted at the wish to seize it militarily.

In early September, Abiy said Ethiopia's "blunder" of losing access to the Red Sea as a due to Eritrea secession would be "corrected tomorrow".

The Ethiopian envoy to neighboring Kenya, retired Gen Bacha Debele, said that Assab was "Ethiopian property" and would be restored "through military action".

Eritrean Answer to the Claims

Despite persistent challenges from Ethiopian officials, Asmara's position has been limited to brief comments on X from Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel.

Officials have denied Ethiopia's demand for access to the Red Sea labeling it "hazardous" and a "toxic agenda" of "irredentism" – a policy of reclaiming lost territory.

Government spokespeople warned on 16 September that attempts to legitimise "obvious provocation" would have serious consequences for Ethiopia and its neighbors and is a "boundary that should not be crossed|violated|breached".

Defense Preparations on the Region

So far, there are few indications of major military movements in the border areas between the two countries.

However, in the country, state television has shown training completions of numerous trainees at multiple army bases.

The director of staff section of the defense force, General Hachalu, commented lately in an conversation that the military was in a "strong stance" as "many thousands of recruits" were joining it, which he said was "a warning to our enemies".

Past Background of the Dispute

For more than half a century from 1890, the territory was governed by Italian rulers.

Following Italy's defeat, it was then administered by the UK forces before evolving into a integrated region of the Ethiopian empire.

But in the early 1960s the Ethiopian emperor terminated this agreement and the region became totally absorbed into the Ethiopian state.

A three-decade long civil war followed, concluding with the government's loss in 1991. Autonomy was then confirmed by Eritreans in a referendum in 1993.

Briefly in the 1990s, there were positive ties between the leadership in Addis Ababa and Asmara, but they clashed over the specific demarcation of their mutual frontier, causing conflict in 1998.

Though this finished in a ceasefire agreement in 2000, it was incompletely executed, and the neighbors continued at in dispute.

This ended in 2018, when the Prime Minister made gestures to Eritrea's leader President Isaias. The two signed a declaration that the conflict was over – a move that won the Prime Minister the Nobel Peace Prize.

The both administrations were then cooperators in the country's recent civil war in Tigray.

However ties have subsequently deteriorated anew.
