A group of thirty captive beluga whales in a Canadian entertainment facility have been caught in a struggle between a defunct facility, local and national governments and animal rights activists.

But those working directly with the whales say the heated controversy over their future often ignores the nuances of the whales who, after spending their lives in confinement, have been carefully observed by the caretakers who see them each day.

After the Canadian government blocked the transfer of the belugas to China, the embattled facility near Niagara Falls where they are kept stated it would consider to put them down unless the government funds the upkeep of their survival. The nation’s marine resources official has rejected that demand, placing the thirty whales in an increasingly precarious position.

Intelligent Marine Mammals

Scientists say that beluga whales’ brain structure, along with their mimicry abilities, intellectual tasks and social skills indicate they are remarkably smart mammals – something Kristy Burgess observed directly.

She spent several years as a beluga trainer, a position that involved gaining confidence of the aquatic animals.

“Developing those bonds over time takes a lot of dedication and a lot of affection. At the outset, they’re very wary of you,” she said. “In time, you gain reciprocal understanding. And they start being more open with you. It’s just so extraordinary and fulfilling.”

The trainer knew the whales were exceptionally cognitive, but she says she was even so astounded by the nuances and unique traits in their characters. She cultivated a particular love for a pair of whales with different natures.

“One whale selected me. Cleo made me earn it,” she said. “They transformed the way I understand connection.”

Public Concerns and Facility Decline

Burgess’s connection with the whales developed against a backdrop of increasing societal concern to their enclosure.

During her tenure at the attraction, seven belugas and the park’s one orca, the orca, died. In total, 19 belugas have perished at the park since 2019, a number which the facility attributes to expected lifespan, but which campaigners say indicates the poor conditions in which they were kept.

The facility did not open to the guests over the recent season, but Burgess says she saw with her own eyes consequences of the shutdown. “Structural materials is falling apart from the tanks because they’re degrading and not being maintained. The whales are inquisitive and so they take pieces and navigate with fragments in their jaws. It’s heartbreaking to see.”

The facility did not comment to a questionnaire, but previously asserted: “The whales … obtain far superior medical attention and around the clock care than any person in the Britain, or anywhere else.”

Fate in Limbo and Proposed Solutions

The former employee was fired from the park in recent months following the demise of Eos, an sick beluga the caretakers had to put down. She said the park suspected details of the death were disclosed to the news outlets and she was let go not long after.

The ambiguity over the whales’ outcome has left her and staff members in despair. She says the facility’s warning to end the lives of its whales is a negotiation tactic and is a “extremely difficult” endeavor, adding any attempts to humanely kill even a single beluga would require “immense manpower”, equipment and specialized tools.

“There’s no way in hell the employees would ever do it,” she said.

She backs demands for the whales to be transferred right away from the facility, with its crumbling tanks and reduced personnel.

In recent months, the nation’s fisheries minister rejected a proposal to send the whales to China.

“To approve the request would have meant a ongoing existence in confinement and a return to display for amusement,” the official commented. “As the public, we know that belugas belong in the sea, not in pools for our entertainment. I could not in clear conscience approve an relocation that would continue the situation these belugas have suffered.”

But the former trainer said the official’s statements reflect a more general lack of awareness of the circumstances of living conditions for belugas raised in confinement.

“The people needs to realize these are whales that have spent their whole lives in confinement and they will need constant supervision for the foreseeable future,” she said. “The public just don’t comprehend that it’s not as easy as saying ‘shut it down’.”

Sanctuary Proposal and Ongoing Debate

As officials work to find a resolution, proposals have surfaced, some of which have little basis in reality. An idea called for the belugas to be released into the natural habitat of the Arctic – where whales are a key source of sustenance for Indigenous peoples.

A proposed refuge in the region of Nova Scotia, which now received government approval, has proven contentious. The prospective location, which includes extensive space of enclosed sea water, doesn’t yet exist. Advocates remain optimistic that it could eventually represent a permanent resolution for a number of the whales.

But, Burgess says, among caretakers she’s consulted, there is “doubts there” about what she said is “simply an trial” in the whales’ fate.

Others say the idea of a protected habitat represents a worldwide trend away from captive facilities and could represent a viable plan in the near future.
