Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. And again, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD shared surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a key part of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
