Larian Studios Explains Its Implementation of Machine Learning for Next Project
The studio behind popular titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently teased its upcoming project, generating significant hype within the gaming community. However, subsequent statements from the studio's figurehead have added a new dimension to the discussion, addressing the team's approach toward AI tools.
AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute
In a recent statement, Swen Vincke outlined that the developer is utilizing generative AI for specific supporting functions. These encompass developing presentation materials, producing initial concept art, and creating placeholder copy.
Crucially, Vincke stressed that the end content in the game will be authored entirely by real artists. "Larian is writing every line in-house," he stated.
We are actively increasing our team of writers and are busily assembling narrative groups.
As this area is being particularly called out — we presently have twenty-three artistic staff and have roles to fill for additional artists.
Everything we do is additive and aimed at having people spend greater focus on making content.
Every machine learning application implemented properly is supplementary to a developer's routine, not a replacement for their craft.
Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent
The revelation of employing this technology originally provoked concern among portions of the player base. In reaction, Vincke provided additional detail on social media.
"We use machine learning to gather inspiration, in the same way we use search engines and physical media," he explained. "During the initial planning process we use it as a rough outline for composition which we then replace with authentic artwork."
He continued, "We've hired artists for their creative vision, not for their ability to follow what a algorithm proposes."
Focused Uses for Machine Learning
Vincke had previously outlined the studio's targeted approach to machine learning, grouping its use into three main areas:
- Automation of Tedious Tasks: This includes polishing mocap data, audio processing, and Larian-specific work like adapting animations for different models.
- Accelerated Iteration: Using systems to quickly build basic models of scenarios to test concepts before complete implementation.
- Experimental Frontiers: Exploring how AI could in the future enhance innovative player agency, especially in creating unforeseen permutations in a complex RPG.
He explicitly affirmed that central narrative domains — such as visual art — are are absolutely not departments where the studio is reducing creative talent. Conversely, Larian is actively hiring in these precise roles.
"Our studio is neither launching a game with AI-generated content, and we are certainly not looking at trimming down teams to swap them out with AI," Vincke stated definitively.
