New Year Partygoers Told to Wrap Up Warm with Wintry Weather Predicted Across the UK
Forecasters have indicated a chilly beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are being urged to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Events Continue Amid Forecasts
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are expected to take place, a contrast to last year's postponement. This is in spite of advisories for snow in northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," noted the national forecaster.
Fireworks Under Open but Cold Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks shows, with no rain and good visibility. Temperatures are due to be low, making extra layers essential, according to forecasters.
To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Extensive Snow Warnings for Friday
Heading into Friday, advisories are in place for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- Disruptions and cancellations are expected on trains and buses.
Readings Expected to Plummet Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are likely to affect the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Health Advisories Activated
At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency said this indicated the weather was likely to cause significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This encompasses a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
