Nicolas Sarkozy Set to Write Jail Diary Documenting Three Weeks Behind Bars

Nicolas Sarkozy plans a personal account next month named Notes from a Cell, detailing his time endured in jail.

The revelation was made shortly following the former president left prison as he appeals his conviction related to unlawful coordination connected to efforts to secure presidential race money provided by the leadership of the late Libyan dictator.

Prison Experience: Personal Reflections

“Inside jail there is nothing to see, and activities are scarce,” he reflects in a preview, implying the memoir is more about his reflections while in isolation instead of a broader observation of the overcrowded and troubled French prison system.

“Silence escapes me, which is missing at the prison, where there is a lot to hear,” he states. “The noise unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, inner life grows stronger in prison.”

Freedom Plea: Sharing the Struggle

At his release request hearing, the former leader was present via screen from his cell, describing his time inside as exhausting. He expressed in court: “I want to pay tribute the correctional officers, displaying remarkable compassion, and who have made this nightmare bearable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“It never crossed my mind at this stage of life, I would end up incarcerated. It’s a trial that has been imposed on me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, it’s very hard. It has an impact every inmate as it’s exhausting.”

First of Its Kind

The former president, who led the nation for a five-year term, was the first ex-leader in the European Union and the first leader since WWII of France to experience jail.

Prior to imprisonment he declared he intended to spend the period to write a book.

Cell Library

It is not certain whether he had time to read and critique the three books he had in his cell: a biography of Jesus in two parts and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the classic tale, where an innocent man is imprisoned then breaks out to exact retribution.

Prison Conditions

He remained secluded to protect him in a room of about nine sq metres with his own shower and toilet at the correctional facility located in the capital. Security personnel were stationed in a neighbouring cell.

It was stated that he had eaten only yoghurts in prison worried that any food may have been contaminated. He had facilities to prepare his own meals but he turned this down, according to reports. Not known is if the memoir includes what he ate in prison.

Lawyer’s Statements

Sarkozy’s lawyer, who visited his client every day during the incarceration, informed the court security would be better released compared to inside. “He received menacing messages, heard shouts at night and the urgent intervention in a neighbouring cell as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Charges and Sentence

He entered custody last month following the judiciary imposed a five-year sentence on conspiracy charges over a scheme to acquire political donations for his presidential bid.

He disputes the charges challenging the decision, with a new trial planned for the coming spring.
