The most severe possible consequences of the global heating for the UK have been outlined by experts, encompassing a searing 4C rise in temperatures to a 2-metre rise in sea levels. A separate possibility envisions a decline of 6C in temperature following the collapse of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact farming and power requirements.
Credible Outcomes, Not Forecasts
These effects, a number of which are linked to critical climate thresholds, are considered as improbable but possible. The scientists explained that these models filled a gap in planning that had rendered the UK unprepared for catastrophic possibilities.
"The climate extremes we have mapped aren’t predictions, but they are plausible," stated the professor who oversaw the analysis. "Britain has been planning lacking the frameworks to assess catastrophic outcomes. We've now given policymakers what they need to plan for environmental results they hope never happen, but can’t afford to ignore."
A Spectrum of Harsh Climate Scenarios
Another collection of severe models details the projected severity of harsh climate between now and the year 2100. These indicate that thermometer readings could skyrocket in some months by up to 6C higher than average, while precipitation could be triple standard measurements.
The probability of the worst-case outcomes happening remains uncertain due to uncertainty about what steps will be enacted to tackle climate change and how the climate system will behave. This approach was compared to defence planning or stress tests for the banking sector.

- 4C Temperature Rise: Global temperatures soaring past 4C by 2100 could occur if climate action collapses or if powerful amplifying effects including the Amazon basin becoming a net carbon source emit its enormous store of carbon. This would result in severe and lengthy heatwaves and water shortages hitting the UK in summer.
- Ocean Circulation Failure: A major ocean current, the AMOC, is losing strength and losing stability due to ocean warming. The project was initiated as part of a government’s risk assessment framework. Earlier reports have warned that insufficient focus was being allocated to catastrophic yet improbable risks.
An independent advisory body has stated that the UK needs to "become resilient to moderate heating" and examine the dangers for severe warming. Previous adaptation plans have been criticised as being "insufficient" by certain experts.
